LifeProof flooring is one of the most popular selling floors on Home Depot today. For good reason as it gives the look of hardwood with the benefits of vinyl flooring and winning the Home Depot coveted Innovation of the Year Award. But the age old question always comes up. Does LifeProof flooring require underlayment?

The answer is no. But wait, does it require something else?

Since we are the manufacturer of underlayments, we wanted to look a little deeper into the installation instructions to what they say in their installation instructions:

Should Underlayment (pad) be used?

LifeProof Installation Instructions Screenshot

No – LifeProof™ includes a pre-attached sound mitigating pad. Do not use any additional sound suppression underlayment or padding, as doing so will void the LifeProof™ Limited Warranty

The good news is they do offer pre-attached pad that has sound absorbing properties. No sound ratings are provided for the consumer which can be a downfall for condo, multi-family associations or homeowners who really want to deaden the sound from going room to room.

If you are a condo or multi-family, sound ratings do matter. With our QuietWalk Luxury Vinyl underlayment (designed for luxury vinyl plank) achieving Delta IIC rating of 28 was achieved. The definition of Delta IIC Rating – Performance gain in sound reduction between two sound test. The higher the number, the better the sound proofing is.

Do not use any additional sound suppression underlayment or padding, as doing so will void the LifeProof™ Warranty.

Updated 11/19/2020

LifeProof™ includes a pre-attached sound mitigating pad. QuicPrep Universal Underlayment can be used as an additional underlayment under LifeProof™ floorng. Use of any other underlayment will void the LifeProof™ Limited Warranty.

According to the installation instructions, adding another underlayment such as QuietWalk Luxury Vinyl under LifeProof™ would void the warranty. Our QuietWalk Luxury Vinyl is backed up with a peace-of-mind lifetime warranty. The warranty details can be found here.

Vapor Barrier (6 mil polyfilm) – Not Required

LifeProof Installation Instructions Screenshot

So why would they mention a vapor barrier not required in their installation instructions? All flooring is still acceptable to excessive moisture, alkalis in the subfloor and conditions arising from hydrostatic pressure.

LifeProof Installation Instructions – Screenshot
Concrete Alkaline

This is why we recommend installing a 6 mil vapor barrier under the floor which will block all moisture/chemicals from reaching your brand new flooring. While this still might not protect you from flooding, it will protect you from chemicals/mold reaching your floor and causing havoc.

  • Figuring out what the best acoustic underlay for laminate flooring can be tough. In fact, really tough with all the different underlayment out in the market. In this article, we will go over what you need to look for to help you determine what underlayment works best for you.

Delta IIC Rating – The Rating Homeowners Should Look For

If you are looking for acoustic/sound proofing laminate flooring underlayment, then you would want to be looking at sound rating numbers listed from each product. However, the average consumer doesn’t know what those numbers really mean or which one to look at. To make it easy, you want to look at the Delta IIC Rating number.

The definition of Delta IIC Rating – Performance gain in sound reduction between two sound test. The higher the number, the better the sound proofing is.

Each laminate underlay will have different Delta IIC numbers, so you would want to look at the numbers.

Here is a chart of our underlayment in descending order of Delta IIC Rating test.

    Acoustic Underlay for Laminate Flooring

As you can see our QuietWalk Luxury Vinyl is our (and flooring industries) best acoustic underlay for laminate flooring.

So what makes QuietWalk Luxury Vinyl the leading product in soundproofing underlayment?

The composition of the recycled post-industrial fibers that make up the underlayment. Highly bound together through our manufacturing process, our underlayment is dense allowing the micro fibers to soak up the sound. Having a dense underlayment allows to be compression resistant, ensuring your floor is supported correctly. Certain foam underlayments have “trapped air”, which can be escaped/crushed in high traffic areas.

  • Hardwood flooring comes in many different hardwoods such as maple, hickory, ash, oak and many other exotic varieties. Known for their easy to clean, high quality look, long-term investment and ageless quality. Hardwood flooring is an ideal choice for homeowners. For the many benefits the flooring includes, a homeowner should be aware of when and why underlayment should be considered.

    Hardwood Floor Underlayment

    Soundproofing Your Hardwood Floors

The number one answer would be to soundproofing hardwood floors. If you are looking to soundproof your hardwood floors, we suggest using our QuietWalk Plus or Insulayment. Sound deadening in mind, our manufacturing patented process combines the fibers tightly together to absorb sound and keep it from traveling to other rooms. Most multi-family or condo owners don’t want to wake up or disturb other neighbors/family members in other rooms.

    Moisture Protection for Hardwood Floors

Consider Vapor Retarder for Hardwood Floors

Hardwood isn’t cheap and spending a couple cents more can help support the structure of the floor. No matter what application you use hardwood wood for, wood absorbs moisture from air. Too much moisture and the wood will start to bow and not enough moisture, cracks and separates. Keeping the correct moisture level for your floor helps strength and durability. Using a vapor retarder below your hardwood floor slows down the passage of moisture from reaching.

According to NWFA – a vapor retarder is to be used under hardwood flooring. If you have a NWFA installer installing your floor, they will follow their association installation guidelines. No underlayment is stated in their installation guidelines and any underlayment will get rejected of installation.

    Moisture/Vapor Barrier for Hardwood Floors

A vapor barrier or moisture barrier is another term that often gets misused with vapor retarder and is completely different. Vapor barrier actually blocks all moisture from transferring. Built-in vapor barrier allows no moisture to get to your hardwood flooring. This can be good and bad in certain situations. Each situation can be different, so please give us a call at (888) 379-9695 and we can help steer you in the right direction.

    Clean Indoor Air Quality

Using felt paper or vapor retarder can sometimes be coated with asphalt or tar, which will emit harsh chemical odors. QuietWalk Plus or Insulayment is backed by GreenGuard Gold certification for indoor air quality. This allows our product to be installed in hospitals or government buildings. Keeping your family safe from harsh odors.

    Best Underlayment for Hardwood Flooring?

This depends on your installation type:

  • A antimicrobial pesticide is basically a disinfectant/sanitizer that eliminates all bacteria, fungi, spores and viruses. While underlayments are usually exposed to moisture from concrete or any other liquid spills, it can make people wonder if mold will grow underneath if their is no air circulation.

Polyphase 678 is what MP Global Products uses on all fiber products. A zero VOC, water dispersed fungistat for aqueous based material. With QuietWalk underlayment achieving GreenGuard Gold Certification, you know that the pesticide provides no chemical reaction to human beings. It can even be used in hospitals or schools.

  • STC – Sound Transmission Class

One of the most common sound rating tests used in North America. Covering the most common range of noises we hear including speech, television and other airborne noises. The STC test are done by completing 16 different tests done at the following frequencies (125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, 250Hz, 315Hz, 400Hz, 500Hz, 630Hz, 800Hz, 1000Hz, 1250Hz, 1600Hz, 2000Hz, 2500Hz, 3150Hz & 4000Hz). Each number from the 16 tests are then averaged and you get the STC Rating. Reviewing the sound test data should show the STC contour line of the transmission loss graph. The number will show if the STC contour line is consistent with the frequencies.

The testing is very complex and the numbers are measured across a mathematical equation based on the average of sound rating test across frequencies.

    IIC – Impact Insulation Class

An IIC sound rating test is completed by placing a tapping machine with steel faced hammers hitting a test floor. The impact sounds are between the 125Hz to 4,000 Hz. The vibrations created by the machine travel to the other room. The sound engineer then plots the tap on a graph to compare the results. With concrete sub-floors and no underlayment, the average sound rating is 28 to 35 IIC. Wood sub-floors average rating of 40-45 IIC. Most building and HOA requires a rating of 50 IIC and above.

    Delta IIC Rating

The Delta IIC rating is the sound test homeowners should be looking at. Basically, this rating is what the product adds in terms of absorbing impact noise. The sound test is only done on six to eight inches of concrete slab with nothing above or below the concrete. One test is done without the underlayment and the other test is done with the underlayment. Whatever the difference is the number. The higher the number, the better performance in terms of sound absorption.

These tests are done only with concrete slabs and they don’t perform well in wood structures.

The ratings keep manufacturers from displaying misleading results to homeowners.

    Multi-Family Dwellings

If you are in a multi-family housing or HOA, we recommend you to look at STC and IIC ratings.

    Homeowners

If you are a regular homeowner, we recommend you to look at Delta IIC ratings.

  • As a manufacturer of flooring underlayment for the last 20 years, we have seen a lot of companies and underlayments come and go. More and more underlayments have been showing up within the last 10 years due to Alibaba making it affordable for sellers with little capital to import from China. Most imported underlayments don’t have the same benefits of USA made. Such as sound absorption, clean indoor air quality or even the endurance of product. So we want to inform our customers what they are receiving or how to spot an imported underlayment.

    VOC’s – Off Gassing

With overseas manufacturing, materials aren’t sometimes standardized. Some chemicals are used in the process which can produce an awful order. We at MP Global Products want to make sure our customers know we have zero VOC’s in our underlayment. This meaning that your family will breathe clean air and our underlayment have no awful smelly gas being emitted from our underlayment.

    Sound Rating Test

All bigger underlayment manufacturer will submit sound rating test to sound labs. These cost thousands of dollars to submit. Not only this proves that their underlayment has been tested but homeowners know what to expect with that underlayment regarding sound absorption.

    Industry Experience

Our QuietWalk underlayment has been around for over 20 years. So when it comes to your flooing underlayment becoming faulty, then we will still be around. If an imported product fails, what kind of customer service are you gonna receive?

    Material

Most materials or production material can be inconsistent in the underlayment. The material used can be flimsy or “patched” in certain places. This is due to manufacturer trying to save cost as margins are little in the first place.

At MP Global, we want consumers to know that their is a difference in underlayments. Our QuietWalk underlayment has been an industry standard for flooring installers and dealers for over 20 years and over 40 sq miles of QuietWalk has been installed in United States alone.
