When researching underlayments, you may notice compressive force or resistance numbers on the list of the technical specs. Well, we are going to explore what they mean.

This is the era of “floating floors”. Floating floors are plank or tile shapes that fasten together or interlock with one another, but do not fasten to the subfloor. Examples are laminate flooring, engineered wood, and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT).

If the flooring pieces interlock or click together, the joint between planks or tiles are subject to downward force under heavy foot traffic, or heavy furniture, appliances, carts, etc. Think of it as the joints of each plank gaining strength from the next connected plank and so on.

It is recommended that you select a suitable underlayment that provides firm support for the overlying floor, especially at the click-together joints. If an underlayment is too soft or can be dented or compressed too easily, the flooring joints may come apart beneath heavyweight. Look for an underlayment that resists compressive forces like normal traffic – enough to adequately support the floor and not squish or crush over time.

Underlayment’s like MP Global’s QuietWalk, properly test their underlayments in lab settings to understand how much compressive force it takes to compress the underlayment to 1/2 of its thickness. This force is measured in PSI (Pounds per sq inch) So when you look on the label of QuietWalk and see the label stating 85 PSI – it takes a lot of compressive force to crush it. Looking at other popular foams, it takes a whole lot less. The higher the number the more anti-crush-ability the underlayment has to buckle under the normal performance characteristics your floor will have. The longer your floor will last and perform to protect your investment.

  • Transcription: The QuietWalk 360 sq. ft. rolls offer the main benefit of less taping of seems and unrolling. The 6 ft. wide vs the 3 ft. wide roll allows faster and easier installation all around. Most retailers are going to give you a cheaper price per square foot on the 360 sq. ft. roll. Also, think about where this installation is going to take place. A 3ft. wide roll in a hallway makes more sense than a 3ft. wide roll in a main living area. A 6ft. roll would be much easier to install.

  • QuietWalk luxury vinyl will only work with luxury vinyl planks that are 2mm thick or thicker. Planks below 2mm thick are very thin and underlayment will provide too much cushion, risking the longevity of the flooring.

  • Yes. The DriWick Technology will wick away moisture when concrete emits moisture. If you want to be on the safe side of ensuring your floor is gonna be dry and according to NALFA, installing a 6-mil vapor barrier underneath the QuietWalk will provide complete protection from moisture reaching your floor.

  • Oftentimes, when you are going to be putting down a new floor. The insulation value of underlayment is not really thought about too much, but we are going to be talking today about how important that can be. Not only for your flooring but your pocketbook as well. All products have a certain amount of “R-Value.” R stands for Resistance. R-Value is used to measure the effectiveness of insulation by measuring the resistance to the passage of heat through the walls and ceilings of a home. It is the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

Although many flooring underlayments are pretty thin, QuietWalk’s fiber composition, provides a thermal barrier between the subfloor and the over lying floor.  QuietWalk gives you a superior R-Value compared to many other products.  Go online and look at our reviews and notice how many customers achieve a noticeably warmer floor just by adding QuietWalk underlayments.

  • QuietWalk underlayment can be used under pad-attached. There is a known rumor that extra underlayment with pad-attached may produce a decoupling of the click-lock mechanism. QuietWalk’s compression resistance exceeds the industry requirement for pre-attached flooring that is greater than 29 psi @50% per ASTM D1667. The high compression resistance assures that the underlayment will not contribute to floor decoupling.

  • Welcome to the home of MP Global Products – where for over 25 years we have been manufacturing high performance flooring underlayments and other custom fiber products right here in Norfolk, NE.  We might be located in a small town, but our ideas are big, and our products span the globe!  Let’s see how the best underlayment for hard surfaced flooring on planet is made….

    GREEN Manufacturing

We are a green manufacturer and we like to tout that we were “green” long before being “green”  was ever fashionable!  In general, the DNA of our products come from upcycling remnant fibers from Textile mills that were otherwise destined for a landfill.  Our patented manufacturing process consumes up to 300 tons of these fibers per week!  If we were to convert those fibers to blue jeans, that would be the equivalent of One Hundred Thousand Blue Jeans walking around every Month 😊.

But as it is, these various fibers are sourced from all over the country and are the backbone of all our products including: our mainstay brand of QuietWalk!

QuietWalk and its family of flooring underlayment products have been specified and installed all over the world for sound . moisture control, and unfailing support to the floor’s performance.  In fact, we have sold enough to cover over 40,000 football fields!!!

    Hoppers

Each product has an engineered and tested formula of fibers that are continuously fed in these various hoppers – to further open them up and to blend them together to the designed recipe for the final product.  For our process, the fluffier we make the fibers, the better they are for our process . Each product we make has a certain performance spec and precise formulation of material calculation that results in the end thickness and density.

    Antimicrobial

In one of the last phases of the blending process, we add our anti-microbial treatment to the fibers to inhibit mold and mildew growth in our final products.

As the blend of fibers travel along through a series of air ducts, they are formed on the belt before the thermal bonding process begins.

    Over 400-degree oven –

Over 400 degrees of heat applied to the fibers as they pass on through the oven and this will  thermally bond them together – this additionally kills any microbes or organisms in our product 😊

As it comes out, it goes through a series of rollers and cooling processes that forms the pad to the proper spec of density and thickness of the product being produced.

It is still warm enough to allow the vapor barrier to thermally bond to the fibers.  This “Heat Transfers” onto the fibers without any additional adhesives or chemicals – helping us further our hypoallergenic certifications and excellent Indoor Air Quality Certifications, like our GREENGUARD GOLD stamp that proudly is displayed on every one of our fiber underlayment products.  Not only is this healthy for the end consumer, but for the installer that is working with the materials as well.

Once the product is cut to size, rolled up, and appropriately packaged… we proudly prepare it for our customers’ orders.

As you can quickly see, the power of our products is in our fibers.  And MP Global’s commitment to producing the best performing underlayments on the market –  all start from materials that would have otherwise ended up in our landfills.
